Simple Birdbaths An Easy Way to Provide Water
Keep your birdbath full and you’ll have the enjoyment of watching many colorful visitors throughout the year. Want to really make your birdbath irresistible? Make the water move or make a sound. Anything that makes your water move, drip, sprinkle, spray, or otherwise create motion in your birdbath will catch the eye or ear of a passing bird. Any device, like a recirculating pump, that makes water audible is a great addition to a bird attracting yard. Keep in mind that you don’t need to make a lot of noise or move a lot of water. Their hearing is acute, and they can pickup just a ripple or a drip. Other methods for providing moving water to attract birds (some of which can be attached to your birdbath) are: Sprinklers A good old lawn sprinkler makes a simple, low-cost approach in providing water. Robins and flickers will stay under the spray of a sprinkler for a long time. Drippers The sound of dripping water is also highly effective and can be accomplished very simply. There are commercial dripper devices that attach to your garden hose and are made of metal or plastic tubing, bent into a curve at the top. They will attract many different songbirds. Misters Misting devices, which break water into superfine droplets are really enjoyed by many types of birds. Once they discover the fine spray they will visit it regularly. Hummingbirds will also soon be regulars. Since they don’t tend to perch, a mister is a great way for hummingbirds to bathe. You can attach the mist head to a support post or branch. Then point the spray toward a place where your visitors can enjoy it. These are great alternatives for providing water to your backyard birds that offers a little difference than just simple birdbaths.
